GEOSS envisions a future wherein decisions and actions for the benefit of humankind are informed by coordinated, comprehensive and sustained Earth observations and information. GEOSS will meet the need for timely, quality long-term global information as a basis for sound decision making, and will enhance delivery of benefits to society. |

The project contributes to GEOSS by:
- Supporting the work of GEOSS Architecture and Data Committee and the development of the INSPIRE technical implementing rules.
- Offering initial operating capacities in three societal benefit areas (Forest, Biodiversity, Drought) to GEOSS and establishing a bridge between them through a multidisciplinary approach and cross-cutting research issues.
- Developing and sharing best practices and means for interoperability.
- Sharing the European experiences with developing countries, e.g. in Africa, thus helping them benefit more fully from GEOSS.
- Assessing the economic value of GEOSS through cost-benefit analysis and identifying ways to sustain operational capacities in the near future,
- Engaging the scientific community more fully in the construction of GEOSS and develop further our understanding of the Earth system and of the GEO societal benefit.
